The Bathroom On the second floor of the western palace is the so called Bathroom with frescoes of the time when Niklaus Vintler was the owner of the castle (1385-1413). These paintings have stood the test of time during the centuries. It is a unique room with an original wooden ceiling carrying the original painting of sun, moon and stars on a blue background. Right at the bottom we can see a coloured, marble frieze. Above this frieze is a red wall with hanging motives of eagles and stags. Above the pointed arced door the coat of arms of the Vintler family is shown, two white bear paws on a red field. Two men probably Franz and Niklaus Vintler are setting a helmet on the escutcheon. Left and right of the coat of arms are some men, young and old, with courtly clothing and different postures. One of them turns his back to the visitor and this is a new and unusual presentation for the Late Middle Ages. On the other walls we can see noble ladies, exotic and native animals and some naked men, from which the name of this room derives: The Bathroom. But actually the artist simply didnt finish his work. This room never was a bath room, but probably
the orderly room of the castle. |
