The Mezzanine This room was the former Knight´s Hall of the western palace of Castle Runkelstein. The door to the north used to be the main entrance of this palace. In the middle of the room is an original column, probably from the 14th century. The traces of a romanesque arched window from the beginning of the castle (1237-1242) are noteworthy, particulary the bricks around the window. Paintings dating c. 1390 were discovered in 1995 on the northern wall left from the door. They show two men and two women. The men are giving their coat of arms to the ladies. This is probably a symbolic sign for a proposal of marriage. The man on the right side is successful and the lady seems to be happy but the lady on the left seems to reject the proposal. On the western wall a window niche shows
the coat of arms of arm of the family of the counts of Liechtenstein-
Castelcorn. They were the owners of Castle Runkelstein from the late 16th
until the 18th century. |
